FAQ about self-storage and furniture storage: everything you need to know

If you're thinking about renting self-storage or furniture storage, you probably have questions. Here we answer the most common ones our customers ask.

Prices and costs

How much does a self-storage unit cost?

In Spain, between €25 and €100 per month depending on size (small from €25, medium €50-80, large €80-120), location (Madrid and Barcelona ~30% more) and services (24/7 access costs more).

And furniture storage? Is it much more expensive?

Self-storage (space only) is €25-100/month; furniture storage (transport + packing + storage) is €70-300/month. It's pricier because it includes home collection, professional packing, transport and climate-controlled storage with 24/7 surveillance. If you need transport, the total often works out similar.

Are there hidden extra costs?

Ask about: deposit (1 month), access fees (€15-25), insurance (€8-15/month if not included), early-termination penalty, and whether the price includes VAT (21%). Always ask for a final, all-inclusive quote.

Security and protection

How secure is self-storage?

It varies by company. Minimums: individual lock, controlled building access and cameras in common areas. Premium: 24/7 surveillance, alarm, access control and insurance. Visit the facility before booking.

Does self-storage include insurance?

Not always. Take out additional insurance if you store valuables (€8-15/month): it covers theft, fire and flooding.

Is there a risk of pests or damp?

Low if the facility is climate-controlled, ventilated and treated regularly. Use airtight boxes, never store food, and avoid plants.

What to store and what not to

What can't I store?

Prohibited: flammable materials, explosives, toxic chemicals and pesticides; fresh food, live plants and pet food; wet or mouldy clothing and rubbish. You can store furniture, electronics, dry textiles, books, sports gear and tools.

Can I store a valuable or antique painting?

Yes, with precautions: climate-controlled facility (humidity 45-55%), professional packing, art-cover insurance and documented value. For very valuable items, professional furniture storage is better.

Access and contact

Can I enter the unit whenever I want?

It depends on the access you book: 24/7 (costs 10-15% more), limited (business hours, the usual), or restricted (furniture storage, by appointment with 24-48h notice).

How much notice can they give me to vacate?

The usual notice is 15 to 30 days. Read the contract and respect the exact term.

Contract and legal terms

Do I need to sign a contract?

Yes. It should include your details, a description of the space, price and duration, dates, termination notice, penalties, security clauses and what is prohibited.

What documents do they ask for?

ID, a payment method and contact details; depending on the company, also proof of address or a deposit.

Can I cancel the contract whenever I want?

Yes. At the end of the contract with no penalty (15-30 days' notice); early, there is usually a one-month penalty.

Moving and transport

Does self-storage include transport?

No, usually not. Furniture storage does include transport, packing and home collection.

Can I bring my things in gradually?

Yes, in most cases you can make partial drop-offs at no extra cost. Confirm with the company.

Conclusion: choose the right option

Make an inventory, calculate the volume (height × width × depth / 1,000 = m³), compare several companies, read reviews, take out insurance and negotiate the price for long-term storage.
